New study of The Stage

Errata Editions’ Books on Books series is an on-going publishing project dedicated to making rare and out-of-print photography books accessible to students and photobook enthusiasts.

These are not reprints or facsimiles but complete studies of those originals. Each in this series presents the entire content, page for page, of an original master bookwork which, up until now, has been too rare or prohibitively expensive for most to experience.

Through a mix of classic and contemporary titles, this series spans the breadth of photographic practice as it has appeared on the printed page and allows further study into the creation and meanings of these great works of art.

Workshop - Acadia University   Matthieu Brouillard and Donigan Cumming, "The Photo Book" : March 2nd, 11-4pm.
Wolfville, Nova Scotia   Donigan Cumming’s The Stage (1991) is featured in The Photobook: A History – Volume 2, edited by Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. Matthieu Brouillard is the author of Darkness implacable (2011), a monograph of his photographic works. In 2012, they worked closely together on the creation of a two-person exhibition and publication, Coming through the Fog: les rencontres de Matthieu Brouillard et de Donigan Cumming, and their collaboration taught them a great deal more about publishing. Considering the development and significance of the photobook, Brouillard and Cumming will take workshop participants through the steps of editing and creating their own photo book. This one-day workshop begins with a stack of images, scotch tape and brown paper, and ends up with a meaningful sequence and layout, ready for transfer to a digital platform. Along the way, there will be much to talk about as participants share their ideas and respond to each other’s work. The ideal workshop participant is someone with images that they want to share and a passion for photo books.

For over thirty years, Donigan Cumming has explored the social and ethical implications of the observational image with an “improvised community” of apparently marginal Montreal figures to unsettling effect. His work constitutes an ongoing analysis of the manufactured naturalism of social documentary photography and the subjects it purports to witness and describe. Rooted in the photographic image, his work spans various media from video and installation to drawing and collage.

Dazibao and VU present the series MONOGRAPHIE, a collection of indispensable volumes on contemporary image practices in Quebec.

"To encounter the work of Matthieu Brouillard and Donigan Cumming is to encounter ghosts. Haunts littered with the detritus of hard living, blemished with the effects of a society that has failed them, the ghosts are naked, stripped of clothes and of possessions, squatting the crevices of undergrounds almost void of human presence. Some are barely visible, while others are long dead.

Photography brings them out of the shadows, evidences their presence in the face of the threat of their vanishing.
Brouillard and Cumming are witnesses to a series of presents now past and the spectral traces that have collected in absence."
